New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs. In the 16th match of the ICC ODI World Cup, New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs won the event for the fourth time in a row, and took the first position on the points table.

Chasing New Zealand’s target of 289 runs, the entire Afghanistan team was bowled out for 139 runs in the 35th over. Rahmat Shah 36 and Azmatullah Omarzai were the top scorers with 27 runs.

The match between the two teams was played in Chennai in which the Afghan team won the toss and decided to bowl. New Zealand scored 288 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 50 overs, Tom Latham scored 68 runs and Phillips scored 71 runs.

New Zealand‘s innings did not start well against Afghanistan, with 4 Kiwis getting out for a total score of 110.

Opener Devon Conway was sent to the pavilion by Mujeebur Rahman for 20 runs, Will Young 54, and Richan Ravindra scored 32 runs to Azmatullah Umarzai while Daryl Mitchell was dismissed by Rashid Khan for one run.

After the fall of 4 wickets, captain Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips batted responsibly and took over the team, putting together a brilliant partnership of 144 runs, both batsmen also scoring half-centuries.

However, Tom Latham was then dismissed for 68 and Glenn Phillips for 71. In the final overs, Chapman scored an unbeaten 25 and Santner scored 7 runs, thus the Kiwis scored 288 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.

Chasing New Zealand’s target of 289 runs, Afghanistan’s batting line-up proved to be a wall of sand, none of the Afghan batsmen could hold their own in front of the Kiwi bowlers and the team fell one wicket after another.

Rahmat Shah 36 and Azmatullah Umarzai 27 runs were the top scorers for Afghanistan.

Apart from this, Ibrahim Zadran scored 14 runs, Rehmanullah Garbaz scored 11 runs, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rashid Khan scored 8 and 8 runs respectively, while Muhammad Nabi scored 7 runs and Mujeebur Rehman scored 4 runs.

Chasing 289 runs, the Afghanistan team was bowled out for 139 runs in 34.4 overs.

For New Zealand, Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson dismissed 3, 3 players while Trent Boult took 2 wickets, Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra got one each.

Kiwis have played 4 matches in this World Cup so far and they have won in all four matches while Afghanistan have won only one match in 4 matches so far, they have faced failure in 3 matches.
